About Citizen Knowledge

Citizen Knowledge maps ordinary daily news stories against the argument of The Performance of Obedience: that selective enforcement, not consistent rule-following, is how modern institutions actually operate. The book's full title is The Performance of Obedience: Legitimacy, Law, and the Systems We Pretend to Believe In, by Greg Lewis, currently with UK literary agents.

In practice that means the same law, the same process, the same rule, applied differently depending on who it lands on. This project takes ordinary daily news stories and maps each one against that argument, showing which Part, Chapter, and sometimes subheading of the book the story illustrates.

Entries appear in three formats:

A small number of entries are also marked Counter-Read. These cover stories that look, on the surface, as though they fit the book's argument, but which the reporting does not actually support once examined closely. They are included deliberately: a framework that only ever confirms itself is not being tested. Counter-Read entries end with a short section explaining why the story does not hold up as an example, rather than pretending otherwise.

No images or verbatim text are reproduced from source publications. All summaries are original paraphrase, attributed by publication and date.

The Performance of Obedience is currently unpublished and with UK literary agents; this site exists independently of that process and will keep running whatever its outcome. If a publication deal or other update becomes relevant to readers here, it will be posted on this page.
